What is T1D?

Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) is an autoimmune disease in which a person's pancreas stops producing insulin, a hormone that enables people to get energy from food. It occurs when the body's immune system attacks and destroys the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas.

Type 1 diabetes affects both children and adults at any age, usually before the age of 40. It is most commonly diagnosed with children. When diagnosed there is no way of knowing how long the pancreas has slowed or quit working. Once diagnosed a person depends on insulin to live and a constant threat of complications. Insulin can be given via shots with meals and a long lasting shot, or can be given via an insulin pump where the diabetic constantly receives insulin and more at meal times. Insulin is not a cure!

There is nothing you can do to prevent T1D. And sadly there is not a cure YET! We participate in the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation Walks yearly to raise money and awareness. We hope to turn Type 1 diabetes into Type NONE!
