Austin's Diagnosis

Austin's story:

The week of November 9th we started noticing a change in Austin, several nights that week he would pee the bed which was not his normal he hadn't done that in a very long time. He started drinking more and going to the bathroom more. The morning of November 15, 2014 we were getting ready for our Saturday routine of going with Pappy to the bowling alley for Austin to bowl on his team. We stopped at Pal's for breakfast, Austin had a sausage biscuit and his own sweet tea, well you know how big their tea is, he had it all drunk by the time we got to the bowling alley which is maybe a 10 minute drive if that. We got out of the truck he had to pee, we walked into the bowling alley he had to pee again. We got his ball and everything ready to go, he asked for a Sprite, within 5 minutes the whole can was gone. I started to worry and question it..... Ten more minutes went by and he wanted another Sprite... He drunk that too... He they asked for a 3rd Sprite which i told him no you will have to wait. I called Nathan after bowling and I said I have a feeling about Austin something isn't right and in the back of my mind I was thinking about Sydney and how Heather & Scottie found out about her diagnosis. Nathan then called his sister and we decided to take Austin to her house and use Sydney's monitor just to see what his sugar was. The short drive to her house seemed like hours I was hoping and praying that I was just worrying about nothing. We get to Heather's and she is all ready for it, it took us awhile to get Austin into poking his finger (he is terrified of needles). We held Austin down and got his blood, the worst was next to come.... Sydney's meter just read HIGH, no numbers, just HIGH.... I lost it, Heather started crying, Scottie hugged me and told Heather to take us to Laughlin. So Heather took me and Austin to the hospital. Along the way Heather calls the family in to meet us. They take Austin back his sugar is 631 and his A1C was 10.3..... They decide to keep him overnight for "observation". Thankfully Heather was there with us, she knew what to expect and what was going on. Heather went straight and called a doctor down at Children's Hospital in Knoxville, they said it didn't sound right either but could not make the call. Heather then went and talked to the doctor again and said its not right that she doesn't agree with keeping Austin overnight. Austin's pediatrician Dr. Swarner was then called in and decided yes we do need to transport him to Children's Hospital in Knoxville. We took a very fast ride to Knoxville in an ambulance, Austin fell asleep and slept like a baby all the way down there. The whole family followed behind. The staff and doctors at Children's Hospital is absolutely amazing, Austin had more tests to go through. We stayed in the hospital, they trained us the whole time on how to give shots, we even went through 2 days of training with a trainer and a nutritionist. Austin had several visitors to come and see him, which cheered him up. He was so ready to go home. We all tried to make his stay as comfortable as possible. Austin has to have 4 shots a day, 2 at breakfast, 1 at lunch, and 1 at supper, each shot is a struggle. Austin is still terrified of needles, at first it took 5 people to hold him down to give him a shot. We stayed in the hospital from Saturday to Wed morning.

Our first day at home:

We were scared to death, but knew in our hearts that this is what we had to do to keep him healthy, it could be so much worse. Things were so much easier when you had a nurse there to help, but we soon got comfortable with doing the shots at home. Austin got to where he would run and hide from us when it was shot time. Now he doesn't hide, but he still screams and cries when it is shot time. It is a daily fight and everyday is a new struggle, I would like to say it gets easier, but it really doesn't, you have so many emotions that you go through each and every day.

We have been truly blessed with wonderful family and friends that has been by our side along the way; and we serve an amazing God. We couldn't get through this journey without the support. We are truly blessed to only live 2 minutes away from my parents and only 5 minutes from Heather & Scottie, they have been our biggest supporters through this whole journey.
